Signal to Scale

Insight. Action. Growth.

Most businesses don’t suffer from a lack of signals.

Customers are generating them. Markets are generating them. Technology is generating them. Data is generating them. AI is generating more of them than organisations know what to do with.

The harder problem is what happens next.

Which signals matter?
What decision should they change?
What should the business do differently?
And does any of it ultimately create growth?

Signal to Scale is about that space between seeing what is changing and actually doing something useful with it.

I write about commerce, customer experience, technology, AI, data, growth and the operating models required to turn intelligence into commercial action.

Not as abstract trends.

As operating questions.

What actually changes when AI moves from experimentation into the core business? What happens when digital stops being a channel and becomes part of how the enterprise operates? How should customer experience, technology and commercial strategy come together? Which innovations genuinely improve economics, and which simply create more transformation theatre?

Because spotting the signal is increasingly easy.

Knowing what to do with it is where advantage begins.

About me

I’m Sumit Srivastava, a commercial and digital transformation executive with more than two decades of experience building, scaling and transforming businesses across retail, eCommerce, technology and marketplaces.

My career has spanned developed and emerging markets across North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East, with leadership roles across organisations including Sears, Target, eBay, DoorDash, Virgin and Al Tayer.

I have led large-scale businesses and transformation agendas across eCommerce, omnichannel, product, technology, data and analytics, digital marketing, CRM, customer experience, trading and commercial growth.

The common thread has remained remarkably consistent:

how to turn technology, data and customer insight into commercial advantage.

That perspective comes from operating businesses, carrying P&L responsibility, building teams, launching products, fixing underperforming models and making transformation work inside real organisations with real customers, targets, legacy systems and politics.

Because strategy becomes considerably more interesting once somebody has to make it work.

What I write about

The ideas here generally sit across five interconnected areas.

Commerce & Customer

How shopping, marketplaces, channels, loyalty and customer expectations are changing, and what businesses need to do when customers move faster than organisational structures.

AI & Technology

Where AI and emerging technologies genuinely change economics, capability and customer experience, and where the hype gets ahead of the operating reality.

Data & Intelligence

How businesses turn enormous amounts of customer, commercial and operational data into better decisions rather than simply better dashboards.

Growth & Economics

Customer acquisition, lifetime value, monetisation, marketplaces, retail media, operating leverage and the mechanics of sustainable commercial growth.

Leadership & Operating Models

How organisations, decision rights, incentives, processes and leadership need to change when technology becomes embedded in almost every commercial decision.

The interesting questions usually appear where these areas collide.

Why I started Signal to Scale

There is already more than enough content explaining that AI will change everything, customers expect convenience and companies need to become more digital.

Those observations may be true.

They are just not particularly useful anymore.

The harder questions sit underneath them.

What does this actually mean for the person running the business?

What needs to change?

What should remain untouched?

Where should capital go?

Which capabilities should live inside the organisation?

Which decisions should technology make?

Who should own the customer?

What creates genuine competitive advantage?

And what happens when the beautifully designed transformation diagram finally meets the messy enterprise?

Those are the questions I’m interested in.

Signal to Scale is therefore not intended to report trends. It is about interpreting them through the lens of someone who has spent his career operating through them.

Sometimes that means challenging prevailing wisdom. Sometimes it means connecting developments that appear unrelated. And occasionally it means admitting that the industry has created an extraordinarily complicated solution to a remarkably simple problem.

The objective is always the same:

move from observation to implication, from implication to action, and from action to commercial outcome.

What to expect

I publish substantive essays on the forces reshaping commerce and modern businesses, alongside occasional shorter observations when an idea is better expressed without turning it into a white paper.

Expect practical perspectives, uncomfortable questions, commercial implications and a healthy suspicion of transformation jargon.

If you are a CEO, CXO, board member, investor, operator or simply interested in how technology is changing the mechanics of business, Signal to Scale is for you.

Because ultimately this publication is built around one question:

Once you see the signal, what are you going to do with it?
